An exquisite display plate by Totaro Sakuma (1900 -1976) featuring a blossoming plum tree with persimmon khaki and iron brushwork. Sakuma was mentored by Living National Treasure, Shoji Hamada (1894 - 1977) and was one of the leading Mashiko potters in the Mingei movement. He learned to use the glazes that Hamada had perfected with Bernard Leach whilst in St Ives, England. His quiet and reserved work gained him significant notoriety in Japan but he is still little known in the West.
